How to Update ASUS Router Router

Firmware updates provide important changes to your device, from vulnerability patches to performance improvements and support for new functionalities.

With ASUS routers specifically, you have various ways to update the router firmware from auto-updates and manual updates via the web interface to the mobile app.

We’ll cover these and other related topics like updating the firmware on AiMesh nodes, flashing third-party versions like Asuswrt-Merlin, and what to do if the firmware update fails in this article.

Before you start, please keep a few things in mind:

  • You must ensure the firmware upgrade process doesn’t get interrupted as this can permanently brick your device.
  • Interruption can be due to power or connection loss. As such, updating with stable power supply and a wired connection is ideal.
  • While updating the firmware is important, you generally shouldn’t install the updates as soon as they’re released. ASUS’s firmware updates in particular have a reputation of being buggy and causing various problems. As such, you should wait a few weeks after the release to ensure the update is stable.
  • Checking the changelogs is a good idea if you aren’t sure whether you really need the firmware update. You can view your current firmware version at the top of the router dashboard.

Update ASUS Router Firmware


Most ASUS routers periodically check if any firmware upgrades are available. If any are found, you’ll be prompted to update in the router dashboard.

  1. Launch any web browser and enter
  2. Enter your credentials to log in to the router dashboard.
  3. Under Advanced Settings, click on Administration > Firmware Upgrade.
  4. In the Check Update section, press the Check button.
  5. If an update is available, click on the Firmware Upgrade button.

Auto-updating is more convenient, but sometimes you won’t be able to connect to the ASUS servers to check for updates. Or you might want to flash an older firmware version. In such cases, a manual update can be useful.

  1. Go to the ASUS Download Center and search for your router model.
  2. Once you find it, go to the Driver & Utility > BIOS & Firmware section.
  3. Download and unzip the firmware file.
  4. Follow Steps 1-3 from the auto-update section to get to the Firmware Upgrade page.
  5. Click on the Choose File or Upload button. Select the extracted .trx file from Step 3.
  6. The upgrade should take a few minutes to complete. Reboot the router afterward if it doesn’t do so automatically.

If you have a compatible router, you can also update the router firmware using the ASUS Router mobile app. For tutorial purposes, we’ve tested this on Android, but the same steps apply to iOS devices as well.

  1. Launch the ASUS router app and select Manage a connected router.
  2. Enter the router’s credentials to log in, then tap Settings at the bottom.
  3. Select Firmware Upgrade > Check Firmware Version.
  4. After checking for firmware updates, press Upgrade Now when prompted.
  5. The process will take a few minutes to complete, at which point, your router will reboot.

Update AiMesh Node / Lyra Firmware

Updating the firmware on AiMesh nodes is mostly the same process as described in the manual update section earlier.

As for Lyra devices, you can’t flash a specific firmware version manually. Instead, you can launch the app and go to Settings > System > Firmware Update. If any updates are available, you can use the Live Update feature to upgrade the firmware.

How to Flash Asuswrt-Merlin

We’ve seen many users switch from Asuswrt (official) to Asuswrt-Merlin (third-party alternative) because the official firmware updates were very unstable, while Merlin provided various bug fixes and customization options. If your router is supported, you can flash Asuswrt-Merlin firmware with the following steps:

How to Use ASUS Firmware Restore

We did warn that interrupting a firmware update can permanently brick your device and render it useless. But that’s not always the case. Typically, after a failed update, your router enters emergency/rescue mode. 

  1. To start, go to the ASUS Download Center and search for your router model.
  2. Select Driver & Utility > Driver and Tools.
  3. Select your OS version from the dropdown menu. Click on Expand All if required. Then, locate and download the ASUS Firmware Restoration zip file here.
  4. Extract the file and run the Rescue installer.
  5. Select the language and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
  6. Connect your PC to the router with an Ethernet cable.
  7. Press Win + R, type ncpa.cpl, and press Enter.
  8. Right-click the Ethernet connection and select Properties.
  9. Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and click on Properties.
  10. Select the Use the following IP address and Use the following DNS server addresses options.
  11. Set a Static IP for your device here with the following values:
    • IP Address:
    • Subnet Mask:
  12. Press Ok > Ok to save the changes.
  13. If your router is already in Rescue mode (indicated by abnormal LED blinking), skip ahead to Step 17. Otherwise, enable Rescue Mode first.
  14. Unplug the power cord from the router.
  15. Long-press the Reset button and connect the power cord while the reset button is still held down. Don’t release the Reset button until Rescue mode is enabled. The power indicator should start flashing slowly once this happens.
  16. Launch the Firmware Restoration utility installed in Step 6.
  17. Click on Browse and open the firmware file for your router.
  18. Press Upload and wait for a few minutes. 
  19. After the rescue completes, the power LED should be steady now instead of blinking. Wait until your router reboots, then press Close.

If the rescue was successful, you can reset your TCP/IPv4 settings to default now. Simply follow Steps 8-10 again but select the auto-obtain options. On the other hand, if the rescue fails, your only option is to contact ASUS Customer Service Center.

  3. Data Size Drama: Excel has its limits, and sooner or later, you’ll bump into them. Large datasets can bring Excel to its knees. Google Sheets handles big data gracefully, giving you the freedom to analyze without constraints.
  4. Dated Data Visualization: Creating charts and graphs in Excel is like painting with finger paints. Google Sheets offers sleek, modern data visualization options that can turn your data into works of art.
  5. Mobile Accessibility: In a world where we’re always on the move, Excel’s mobile app falls short. Google Sheets’ mobile app is user-friendly and lets you access your spreadsheets from anywhere, anytime.
  6. Automatic Backup: Excel doesn’t automatically save your work, and one wrong click can erase hours of effort. Google Sheets automatically saves your changes, so you can breathe easy knowing your work is secure.
  7. Free or Affordable: Let’s talk money. Excel can be pricey, especially if you need advanced features. Google Sheets offers a free version and affordable subscription options that won’t break the bank.

How safe is my data after a hack or leak?

The UK’s elections watchdog revealed on Tuesday it had been the victim of a “complex cyber-attack” potentially affecting millions of voters.

It also emerged personal details of police officers in Northern Ireland were published accidentally.

But what can you do if you are concerned your data may have been leaked, and how can you prevent issues?

How safe is my data?

Generally, when public organisations such as the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) respond to Freedom of Information requests they should remove any identifying data.

But in this case the force published confidential details by accident, leaving some officers and their families with concerns about their safety.

However, an average person affected by a data leak or hack should not panic.

Regarding the cyber-attack affecting UK voters, the Electoral Commission has apologised to those affected but says on its website the data it holds is “limited, and much of it is already in the public domain”.

“According to the risk assessment used by the Information Commissioner’s Office [the data regulator] to assess the harm of data breaches, the personal data held on electoral registers, typically name and address, does not in itself present a high risk to individuals,” it says.

This information could be combined with other bits of data about you, such as what you share on social media, to identify you – but this takes a lot of time and cyber criminals will generally only target prominent individuals like this.

And unless you have opted out of being named on the open electoral register, much of this information will already be publicly available online.

If you are concerned about a different data breach, and are worried your information may have been lost, there are also websites which will tell you if your email was part of a known data breach.

The Electoral Commission specifically recommends people use the free online service Have I Been Pwned (sic) to check this.

What can I do to keep my data safe?

If you believe your password to an account may have been compromised, it makes sense to change it.

But you should be mindful not to respond to any emails recommending this, as they could be attempting to scam you – instead you should visit the website as normal, and change your password there.

This is also why it is important to have different passwords for different accounts.

By always keeping different log-in credentials, a future hack is less likely to affect you seriously as the hackers will not be able to use your data beyond accessing a single service you used.

Another thing people can do is to remain vigilant online to avoid any data loss.

Recent research from Barclays released on Wednesday shows that 87% of all scams take place on tech platforms, such as dating apps, social media and online marketplaces.

It says these scams are on the rise, and it wants tech platforms to shoulder some of the liability.

“Without the joint help of tech organisations, the Government, and regulators, we risk enabling the unchecked growth of what is now the most common crime in the UK, hurting countless individuals, and costing our economy billions each year,” says Barclays CEO Matt Hammerstein.

“Our data shows that tech platforms – particularly social media – are now the source of almost all scams. However, there is no current legislative or regulatory framework obliging the tech sector to support the prevention of these crimes, as there rightly is for banks.”

But there are a few simple steps you can take to stay safe online, which can help protect your data – and your wallet.

These include using a strong password for each site you visit, avoiding emails from people you do not know, and being careful when visiting unfamiliar websites.
